Localism and Regeneration

By admin on December 14, 2010

So now we have the Bill and we know about the money for local government. How can we deliver regeneration in this new context? Local is the right starting point UKR is a strong supporter of localism – by which we mean driving forward change in a way that is tailored to the circumstances of [...]

Forward or Back?

By rico on November 28, 2010

At first it was right in front of our eyes: ‘Localism’.  Everywhere we turned it was there in the printed word or ministerial mantra.  Now I’m starting to need binoculars to see where local has gone. RDAs split the country into nine and that, we were told, was far too distant from the places, communities [...]

The Great LEP Forward

By rico on November 19, 2010

Such a rich seam of jottings awaits us about LEPs, the world without RDAs and snippets from life after regions.  Progress so far has 24 initial LEP proposals going forward whilst the rest vary between (a) a nod to keep trying, (b) go back to the drawing board and (c) Lancashire.  Congratulations to all for [...]

About UK Regeneration

UK Regeneration (UKR) was created to provide people with the indispensable tools they will need to deliver regeneration in the new political and economic context. UKR influences emerging policy; supports practitioners in all aspects of their roles; and gets actively involved in delivering regeneration projects.

Showing the way

UKR is about delivery: demonstrating how to transform places with purpose built private rented homes with a mix of other uses. We are in discussion with local authorities across the country. We welcome conversations about possible projects. There are very clear criteria in our “Framer”.  This has 9 simple criteria covering: the right site; the right approach; the right way forward.  Download our one page document  “Framing the right collaboration” and contact us on projects@ukregeneration.org.uk

Sandfields our pilot project

We announced at MIPIM the next steps on our  collaboration with Nottingham City Council on our pilot project at the Sandfield Centre in Lenton. You can find out more about the scheme on the dedicated website.

Influencing the debate

We have commented on all aspects of policy over the last two years. When it looked as though the Government was not providing an overall policy framework we proposed our own White Paper.
You can see all our contributions   on this blog but more recently you can find our commentary on Jackie’s blog at the Estates Gazette

Our Forum

We also get together with key opinion formers to discuss important topics about regeneration and development in the UKR Foru. The next session will be on 18 April.
If you would like to join in contact Gill Marshall
You can see the results of the conversations we have had on our Forum website.

Green chains

January 20, 2011

(n) A ubiquitous concept based on the odd assumption that people, on visiting one park, will want to move directly on to several more in sequence, provided they are linked by tree lined streets. Believed to be derived from observation of mating voles, but not of any obvious known human behaviour. Nevertheless they provide enjoyment, and employment, for green minded planners, and create attractive images on maps. No green chain has been known to have been identified in the real world

Driving

January 20, 2011

(vb) good regeneration never simply occurs, or takes place, it is driven, as in ‘driving forward the creation of a new market led tech based new innovation economy for (perm any place out of several hundred)’. In the tradition of regeneration, the amount of driving is usually in inverse proportion to the progress actually acheived. Often it is explicitly ‘driven forward’ – which tends to means that, in fact, it is likely to end up some distance behind where it started. It is understood that the Localism Bill is introducing the new Coalition concept of ‘driving regeneration backward’, where it may well have significant success

Olympic Legacy (n)

January 13, 2011

A vibrant (qv) and growing branch of urban theology whose core belief is that spending a very, very, very large amount of money on sporting venues in a very, very, very, small part of the country, will bring potentially limitless benefits to a potentially limitless number and range of people, or possibly Tottenham Hotspur

Kick start (vb)

January 13, 2011

a generally vain attempt to get something immovable to move, with a large amount of hubris and publicity, and few obvious or measurable results. The kick, applied without due care, can have the opposite effect to that intended and bring it to a final and permanent halt.
